Manager of Original Programming / Management
Kerry Moraes-Sugiyama is a proud member of the Tsimshian and Haida Nations from the Pacific north coast of British Columbia. Over the course of her career, Kerry has helped shape Indigenous media.
Inspired by her roots, and envisioning a future where Indigenous stories are woven into the fabric of Canadian culture, Kerry’s foray into Indigenous broadcasting began in 2006 when she joined APTN as a programming coordinator. In 2010, she moved up to programming manager at the network. Endowed with a natural ability to form alliances with industry creators and artists, her passion for the arts has grown with her professional experience in the industry. While on a six-year hiatus from APTN, she expanded her skills by directing and producing documentaries as well as a wide range of TV productions such as First Talk, Red Earth Uncovered and Sasquatch’n.
Kerry returned to APTN in 2018 as associate manager of programming with practical and creative knowledge, along with a degree in business administration and communications diploma from Capilano University. She returns at a time when remarkable Indigenous films, documentaries and dramas are punctuating the media landscape in Canada. As APTN’s manager of programming, Western Region, Kerry is excited to be at the forefront of progress and honing new concepts that redefine the industry.
